PMI for Migrant Workers?

UK firms may have to take out PMI for migrant workers.

In an attempt to cut spending on public services, Home Secretary Theresa May has unveiled a new government proposal which may insist that UK firms take out PMI to cover their migrant workers.

According to Theresa May “The Government believes that sponsors should do more to ensure that migrants and their dependants do not place undue burden on local public services and would therefore be interested in views on whether employers should be asked to hold health insurance for their employees”.

Whilst insisting that the “government recognises the importance of attracting the brightest and the best to ensure strong economic growth”, the Home Secretary described the burden which unlimited migration puts on our public services.

The proposal was published following the announcement of a temporary cap that will be placed on the number of non-EU workers allowed into the UK. It has also been suggested by the new government, that workers seeking entry into the UK could score additional if they held some level of health insurance.

The government is currently consulting on this proposal and a decision is expected within the next twelve weeks.
