NHS hospitals in Bristol put thousands of patients at risk
A report published in the Bristol Evening Post last week has disclosed the number of patients put at risk last year due to mistakes made by staff in several NHS hospitals across Bristol. The extent of these mistakes and their consequences are alarming.
According to the report, more than three mistakes were made everyday in prescribing and supplying medication and more than 300 wrong or inappropriate procedures were carried out during the last year in NHS hospitals in the Bristol area. 8 of the more serious incidents occurred in the maternity unit, these were due to errors in medication and delays or failing to follow up test results.
The figures also show that 28 people in Frenchay and Southmead hospitals died and three patients at the Bristol Royal Infirmary were put at “high risk” after mistakes were made by hospital staff. Furthermore, 9500 other incidents across the region in which patients could have suffered harm as a result of such mistakes have been recorded.
Whilst it has not been confirmed that the incidents above can be directly attributed to the mistakes which were made, the figures remain undoubtedly worrying for patients across our region that depend upon the advice and treatment provided by staff in these NHS hospitals.
