Bristol Musician denied cancer treatment on the NHS

The ongoing plight of musician Martin Moss to receive vital cancer treatment was illustrated this weekend in the Bristol Evening Post.

Bristol musician Martin Moss discovered in September last year that he had bowel cancer which unfortunately spread rapidly to his liver.

Whilst the tumours in his bowel were successfully removed on the NHS, chemotherapy was required to reduce the amount of cancer on his liver.

The musician was advised that the most effective treatment would be selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT) which, despite having been declared safe, is still not readily available on the NHS.

Although patients elsewhere in the country had been granted this treatment on the NHS, when Mr Moss applied to the NHS Bristol the treatment was refused.

In spite of Health Secretary Andrew Lansley’s revelation last month that a £50 million cancer fund would be created to provide patients with greater access to a range of potentially life-saving drugs, the NHS in Bristol has refused to alter its stance, insisting that this treatment “remains an experimental treatment with little evidence to support its use.” (Bristol Evening Post)

However, Martin Moss can’t afford to wait for the NHS in Bristol to approve this treatment.

Fortunately for the musician, friends have rallied together to develop fundraising events including gigs, bike rides and even skydives to raise money for the treatment.

These events have already raised a remarkable sum of £16,000 but another £4000 is still needed to fund the full cost of Mr Moss’ treatment.
